The term “Ruby” is derived from the Latin word “ruber” which means “red”. The gem ranges from pink to blood-red in color and is a type of the mineral corundum. The red color is mainly caused by the presence of chromium in the gemstone. Ruby forms one of the four precious gemstones together with emerald, sapphire and diamond. The value of the stone is hugely determined by its color and clarity. Just like diamonds, the clarity of the stone goes a long way in determining its price value. A clear Ruby without any of the needle like inclusions may however indicate that the gemstone has been treated. Gemologists used these inclusions to identity real rubies, simulants, synthetics or substitutes. The gem is generally subjected to enhancements such as fracture-filling, heat-treating and flux-heating. The other two important factors that determine its value are carat and cut. The gem is formed by intense pressure and heat, deep within limestone rich in clay. Ruby is normally found within volcanic rock or basalt, metamorphic rocks and alluvial deposits.

 The mineral is a nobility gemstone. The energy that the Ruby gem emits is believed to be vivid and intense. It is supposed to encourage an individual to follow bliss and also acts as plugs for openings in the energy fields. Throughout time, it has been said to possess various mystical properties and have positive effects. Powdered Ruby was believed to counteract poison and cure liver diseases. They were also believed to have the ability to restore vitality and youth, when rubbed on skin. For hundreds of years the gem was considered the gemstone of energy, power, love, passion and a zest for life. Ruby is also known as the blood gem in addition to being called the fire gem. It is believed to increase vigor and energy, and vital life forces. Legends reveal that an individual who possesses a Ruby gemstone can go through life without the fear of misfortune or evil. Physically, the gem is thought to balance and energize, and instill passion for life in a person.
